Making Peyote Stitch Samples Part I Beadwork March/April 2000 Return to Sampler Main Page I have eliminated the Navigation Bar on this page so that you can make your own personal copy. Just return to the Main Sampler Page to move around Beadwrangler's. |
All the following samples will be made with single thread, not doubled. You will be working in rows for these samples. Each time you begin a sample, string on one extra bead as the stopper bead, tie it on the end of the thread in a single knot with a 4" tail to stitch in later when you take the stopper bead off. After you have made the first three rows, take off the stopper bead and use a needle to stitch in the excess thread following the thread path in the piece. The stopper bead is not included in the sample bead counts. |

General Instructions
It is very important that you follow the thread path for samples when adding new thread and stitching in loose threads. In a jewelry piece, it is not noticeable if you take the thread across and between the beads to stitch your thread the opposite direction. In a sample however, you want to show the exact thread path and threads crossing the thread paths will defeat the purpose.
When working in flat rows, you will begin the first stitches from the end opposite the stopper bead. To add new thread, start your needle at the opposite end from where the thread will begin again, leaving a 2" tail, take the needle through from the bottom to the top following the thread path and bring it out to where the next bead will go. Then cut the 2" tail off from the beginning point and continue. When stitching in loose thread, continue following the thread path to the other end of the piece before cutting off the loose thread.
Czech Peyote Bead Colors
Delica Peyote Bead Colors
Peyote Rows - The first beads you string , the 1st color, will break into rows 1 and 2. The 2nd color beads you add will become row 3. Row 1and 2 in the flat peyote stitch samples will always be the 1st color; rows after that will alternate in the 3 colors. The last row you make should end with the 1st color. Follow the illustrations for making the samples.

String 30 beads, 1st
color, string 1 bead of the 2nd color, take the needle through the 2nd
bead of the 1st color and out again. Pull the thread taut. Now you should have
two beads setting across from each other, one is the 1st color and one is the 2nd
color. String 1 bead of the 2nd color, skip the next bead of 1st color and take the needle through the next bead. Follow the illustration for adding beads. You should have added 15 beads of the 2nd color when finished. Pull the thread taut. Now you are at the other end of the beads. You should have 3 rows; 2 rows of the 1st color and 1row of the 2nd color. String 1 bead of the 3rd color and take the needle through the last bead of 2nd color you put on. Now you will string 1 bead of the 3rd color at a time and take it through a 2nd color bead. Continue to the end. String one 1st color bead again and begin row 4, followed by the 2nd color for row 5 and 3rd color for row 6, continue alternating the colors until you have a total of 38 rows. When finished, take the needle through the thread path of the beads to the opposite end and cut the excess thread. At the end of the row, you can also take the needle in the next bead row and work back again to the other end before cutting off the excess. This means the last strand went down through one row and back through the next, following the thread path. After completing this sample, make a 1 drop peyote sample using only the 1st color beads

Thats it, your first samples of many to come. I got so excited making samples, I made a bunch of extras and now I am going to incorporate them into a beadwork item. When it is finished, I will put an image up in Beadwork Applications.
