How do I.....

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I print a page?
Answer :

SPECIAL NOTE: I previously printed instructions here for working around printing problems with various web browsers and with AOL.  However, it appears that with the release of the lastest versions of AOL, Microsoft Internet Explorer  and Netscape Communicator, all of the printing problems have gone away.

So, if you experience printing problems, download the newest version of your Online Service software and the latest version of your browser.  You can download the latest browsers by using the connections to Microsoft and Netscape in the How do I get the latest Web Browser? section.

If you are using the latest software and still having printing problems, send me an email describing the problem and the Service and Browser you are using.

Introduction
There are many items on the Beadwrangler’s Website that you will want to retain for later use. Examples are the free patterns and instructions in the Workshop, the organizational listings in the Lists section and the Events page. You can either print them directly to your printer or save then on your computer’s hard disk. If you save pages and images as files, then you must be able to view them and print them later. This section covers Printing.  See also How do I save pages?, How do I save images? and How do I view the pages and images that I have saved?

Printing
When you print a webpage, you are printing an "html" file.  This is basically a text file with imbedded instructions for showing images and activating links to other sections of the document or to other webpages.  If you are using one of the latest browsers, your printer will probably print out the entire text with the images placed in the text where they belong.  This is the ideal.  If you have an older browser. you may print only the text.  If you want to print the images, try right clicking on one and see if the menu that pops up has a Print option.  If so, try clicking on it.  Also, try using the Print command in your File drop down menu.  If none of these work, save the image to your computer as shown in How do I save images? and then print it later.

If you are unable to print the webpage by simply using the browser's Print command, use the copy and paste option.  Highlight all of the text that you wish to print.  If you want the entire page, click on the Edit drop down menu and select "Select All".  Now right click on the highlighted text and select "Copy" from the menu.  Now open your word processor or NotePad and create a new page.  Left click anywhere on the black page.  Now, right click and select "Paste" from the menu.  All of the highlighted text from the webpage appears on your new document.  Now, just use the Print command to print out the text.  Use the most powerful application you have.  Notepad is the least powerful and will not reproduce any of the formatting or any images you copied.  If you have the latest version of Word, you may get the entire page you copied with all of the formatting, all the images and even the hyperlinks embedded into the text.  These heperlinks will even work if you save the file as an HTML file and bring it up later in your browser.

Remember, if all else fails, you can always copy and paste to one of your other computer applications and then print from there.

Of course, the easiest way is to print text and images straight from your browser to your printer.  Both the Microsoft and the Netscape browsers are free.  Many webpage features can only be experienced with the newsest browser versions.  See How do I get the latest browser?

If you provide copies of my webpages to friends, be sure to note on the printed sheet that the material came from The Beadwrangler at www.beadwrangler.com.

You may reproduce material from Beadwrangler's in your organization newsletters.  Just give credit to The Beadwrangler along with the website address: www.beadwrangler.com.

You may NOT use material from Beadwrangler's in books or magazine articles without express written permission from The Beadwrangler.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I save webpages?
Answer:

With the latest browser versions, saving webpages is easy.  Just click on the File drop down menu and select "Save As".  Be sure to give the file you are creating a name that you will recognize later.  Also, be sure that the file is being saved in the correct Folder.  You can select an existing Folder or create a new Folder.   If you don't do this, you probably won't be able to find the file later.

The file you save will be an 'html' file meaning that it is formatted for the web, not your word processor.  Therefore, when you view the webpage you saved later, you will view it with your browser.  See  How do I view the webpages and images that I have saved?

Html files contain the text that you see on the screen.  They also contain references to any images that appear on the screen.  These 'references' contain the name and location of the image files.  When you save an html file using the File - Save As option, you save only the html file, not the image files.  So, when you view the saved html file on your browser, the images will be missing.  See How do I save images? to solve this problem.

If these procedures for saving the webpages and images don't work for you, revert to Copy and Paste procedures.  Highlight the text or image and use the Edit pulldown menu to Copy your selection.   You now have a duplicate copy of the text or image on your 'clipboard' (a place in the memory of your computer for temporarily holding items).  Now open some other application such as NotePad, WordPad, Word or WordPerfect), open a blank page and click the 'Paste' icon (or select Edit - Paste).  For images you will need to open an application that handles images.  Once you have the text or image in your application, save it as you normally would.  Now you have your own personal copy of the text or image that you copied from the webpage.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I save images?
Answer:

To save an image on a webpage, right-click on it.  Then select "Save image as..."  When the Save window appears, select a name and location for the image file.  If you don't specify the name and folder location before you save the file, you probably won't be able to find it later.

I said in the How do I save webpages? section that webpages contain references to the location of images that appear on the webpage.   Normally, when you save a webpage as an html file and view it later, all the images will be missing.  At Beadwrangler's all of the images are found in a sub-folder called "images".  So, if you create a sub-folder to the folder where you saved the webpage and save all the images in that sub-folder, the images WILL appear when you view the webpage later.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I view the webpages and images that I have saved?
Answer:

With your browser.  Yes, you can use your browser for more than surfing the Internet.   Using the File drop down menu, select the "Open" option.  Find the Folder where you saved the webpage or image.  Double click on it.  Wow! There it is on your browser.  That was easy.

If you want to edit them or combine them with other webpages and images that you have saved, you will need to view them in applications that are able to handle html files and GIF and JPG formatted images.  You can open html files in Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect and them import images.  You can also import html, gif and jpg files into PageMaker documents.  However, if you are planning to use web images in printed material such as organization newsletters, I would recommend importing the image into an image editor such as PhotoCopy, PhotoPaint or PaintShopPro and coverting it to an image more appropriate from print such as TIF, BMP or EPS.

If you distribute this material to others, please indicate that the source is The Beadwrangler and that the website address is www.beadwrangler.com.

You may NOT use material from Beadwrangler's in books or magazine articles without express written permission from The Beadwrangler.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I get the latest web browser?
Answer:

Just click on one of these icons.  The browser is free.   Unfortunately browser files are huge.  It will take several hours to download.   I recommend doing it late at night or very early in the morning when the Internet is not so busy.  As an alternative you can elect to have the browser sent to you on a CD for a small shipping charge.  This is much better than downloading over the Internet because you will then have a permanent copy of the browser which you can re-install if something goes wrong with your computer.  Even if you have an Internet Service with a built in browser like AOL, it is still a good idea to have a browser on your computer.  As I show you in other sections of Help!, you can use your browser to view webpages and images that you have saved while surfing the Internet.

Answer:

Send an email to lydia@beadwrangler.com   Include your name, email address and phone number.  Describe the event giving dates, times, location and admission fee if any.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I add my organization to your list of organizations?
Answer:

The only organizations I list at Beadwrangler's is a list of Bead Societies.  That is because there is no national bead society with a website where you can find all of the local bead societies.  Other organization lists you have viewed here are actually located at another website which I have provided a link to.

If you have a Bead Society listing, send it to lydia@beadwrangler.com

For all other organizations, visit the website where the organization list is located.  Find their email address and provide them with your organizational information.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I get to a link I found at your website?
I get an error message when I try to click to it.
Answer:

Websites come and go.  I weed out the ones that have disappeared.  However, you may try clicking to one of those before I find out that it isn't there any more.  As a result, you will get an error message.  If you have time, drop me a short email letting me know that the website has disappeared.

Sometimes, you are unable to connect to a website because the server hosting the website is too busy.  Sometimes you can reach the website by clicking on the hyerlink two or  three times.  If that doesn't work, you will just have to try it at some later time.  If this happens a lot with a particular website that you like to visit, you should let the website owner know that their server is frequently overloaded.  They probably won't know about the problem until you tell them.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I get a link on one of your pages?
Answer:

Send me an email that contains a hyperlink to your website.  Indicate in your email the page or section at Beadwrangler's that you would like to have a link.

First email me and tell me about your new book.   If I haven't already received a copy from another source, I will need a copy.   I receive many books from publishers and distributors for review, so be sure and email me before you send a copy.  Be sure to furnish your business name, email address, mailing address, book price and shipping charge.  Also, let me know if you accept credit cards.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I become a feature writer for Beadwrangler's?
Answer:

Email me.  Tell me what subjects you would like to cover and your qualifications.  I am primarily interested in two types of feature articles.  First, articles that cover what is going on in your area (i.e. knitting, polymer clay, embroidery, stained glass, etc).  This type of article would cover new techniques, national events, artists of note, books, magazine articles, websites, new tools and supplies on the market.  Second, articles that entertain.   This type of article would be a humorous coverage of an event, an experience or the current status of affairs in your particular area.  If you enjoy writing, I look forward to hearing from you.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I see the whole page on my screen without having to scroll to the left and right?
Answer:

Change the settings on your computer for a larger screen resolution. The Beadwrangler website is best viewed in the 1024 x 768 screen resolution setting.  If you are using a PC computer with Windows, it is easy to change your screen resolution.  Just minimize this window ("-" symbol in upper right corner) so that you can see your desktop.  Then right click in an open area on your desktop (not on an icon).  In the menu that appears, click on Properties.  In the new window that appears, click on the "Settings" tab at the top.  Now with your mouse move the sliding pointer to the 1024 x 768 setting.   Click on "Apply".   Click "OK" on the 15 second warning.  When you see the message: "Do you want to keep this setting?", click "Yes" and then click "OK".  Your video monitor is now in a 1024 x 768 resolution and you can see everything without scrolling from side to side and up and down.  If you do not have a 1024 x 768 setting on your computer, select the highest resolution you have, probably 800 x 600.  You will have to do a little scrolling once in a while to see the entire screen but not as much as when your resolution is set to 640 x 480.
You can always change the screen resolution back to another setting by repeating these steps.  A higher screen resolution will make your Internet surfing much more fun.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I use material I found on your website in our organizational newletter?
Answer:

First, you are free to use any material you find here in your organizational newsletter.   Just make sure that you indicate that the source of the material is The Beadwrangler and indicate my website address: www.beadwrangler.com    To save webpages and images to your computer for later use in a newsletter, see How do I save webpages? and How do I save images?  I would really appreciate a copy of the newsletter when it is ready.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : I am a shop owner.  How can I get Beadwrangler books and thread for my shop?
Answer:

Email me.  I have a rate schedule for each book and a wholesale catalog for thread.  Also, my books are available from several distributors so you can order from them or order from me.

Arw150.gif (531 bytes)Question : How do I put a link to Beadwrangler's on my website?
Answer:

For a simple text link like this:

Click here to go to Beadwrangler's

the html code is:

<a href="http://www.beadwrangler.com">Click here to go to Beadwrangler's</a>

To have a logo that acts as a link to Beadwrangler's like this:

beadwrangler.gif (2007 bytes)

the html code is:

<a href="http://www.beadwrangler.com"><img src="images/beadwrangler.gif" alt="Beadwrangler's" align="right" hspace="10" WIDTH="141" HEIGHT="50"></a>

You will need to save the logo by right-clicking on it and saving it to your computer.  Save the logo image file (beadwrangler.gif) where you save your html code for your webpage in a sub-folder called "images".  Or you can save it in the same folder as your html code and eliminate the "images/" from the code above (two places).  You can change align="right" to align="left" or align="middle" or just leave the align statement out.  The hspace="10" places 10 pixels of space around the logo so that your text doesn't run into the logo.
