Scarves edited by Judith Durant ISBN 1-883010-65-9, Softbound, 112 pages, $24.95 US, 1999, Interweave Press, 201 East Fourth St. Loveland, Colorado 80537 Interweave Press continues its long line of wonderfully illustrated weaving books with this one. Handwoven Scarves is a compilation of recipes for some of the most beautiful scarves by 28 of the outstanding weavers and designers of our time. The thing that most impressed me about the book was the fact that it covered projects from the simplest to the more complex. It also didnt spoon feed everything about the project to you. It has comments and tips from the individual designer but there is room left for the weaver to explore and create. I think it could be a real confidence builder for a beginning weaver or someone limited to 4 harnesses. Sometimes we think that we have to have a bigger or better loom to make beautiful fabrics. This book gets you started on the right path. The only negative on the book I have is that for that kind of money 6 or 7 plain weave plates and projects are a bit much. However, the point that I made earlier, that this is a good book for beginners to draw inspiration from negates this theory. Handwoven Scarves will fit nicely in my weaving library and will be used too. I never seem to have enough time to weave much anymore and this book has given me the inspiration to get the old treadles going again. With a scarf as a project, there is hope that I may get it off the loom in less than a year! |
