Weaving With Ribbon by Valerie Campbell-Harding

ISBN 0-7153-8924-6, Hardcover, 127 pages, Sterling Publishing Company, Inc., 2 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016.

Weaving With Ribbon was published in 1987 and yet it could have been written yesterday because the designs work right in with what we in beads and fiber are doing today. Unfortunately the book is out-of-print so you may have to search a little to find a copy. It is well worth the effort. Campbell-Harding starts out with a history and description of ribbons and then offers ideas in color choices. The first chapter describes methods and techniques of decorating ribbons including painting transfer with crayons and stitching. Next is weaving methods, making patterns and finishing on the articles. Weaving various ribbons through other ribbons is an exciting idea. Now we venture through beginner projects of jewelry rolls and handkerchief sachets. Belts, bands, beads and buttons offer lots of variations and ideas to expand upon. Projects include fancy cushions, pillows, neckties, jackets, purses and scarves. Many techniques are included such as quilting, weaving through canvas, diagonal darning, woven spool knitting and weaving through knitting and crochet. Campbell-Harding then explores developing ideas for texture and design experiments, making shaggy pieces, woven knots, using sequin waste and weaving through yarns and stitches. The book is full of color images of designs and techniques. There is even a ribbon woven on a bead loom. Who ever said you could only weave beads on a bead loom? This is an excellent book with a lot of techniques and ideas you can use with your bead and fiber designs today. It is unfortunate this book is no longer available except through used book stores and out-of-print book resources.
