Rhodes and Stachowicz have created a step-by-step how-to pin weaving book that also acquaints you with general terms and techniques for basic weaving. You can use many of pin weaving techniques for weaving on a loom including a bead loom. They have included full size patterns for pin weaving vests. The patterns can be adjusted to fit size small to extra large. You start right in with warping the foam board and transferring the outline to grid. The figures are very easy to follow and you start weaving right away. Weaving techniques include adding beads to the warp thread (Helen Banes technique), plain weave, basket weave, stripes and various slits. In the middle of the book you find color images of woven pieces in many color combinations and one has a face peeking out. Next you find variations of the Soumak technique, ideas for combining crochet and knitting techniques and knotting for unusual effects. They list tips such as care of fabric and fibers, care of warp tension, repair of broken warp threads and slippery threads. Information about using a cartoon, double-warping and tying up loose ends follows. There are complete instructions for preparing a vest and lining it. The last pages offer ideas for accessories such as fancy pockets, lapels and tiny bags. Alternatives are offered for embellishment to the other side of vests on the last page. This is a good introductory book for pin weaving which is also called needle weaving and tapestry weaving. I would like to have seen an acknowledgment to Helen Banes since she was the first artist to introduce weaving on foam board and adding beads to the warp threads. Many techniques are so old we do not know who came up with the idea including pin weaving. However, Helen Banes (co-author of Beads and Threads) started this huge wave of beads being added to warp threads and devised this easy way to set up the loom on foam board. We owe her a great debt of gratitude not only to these innovative ideas, but also for bringing bead and fiber people together. Maybe this is a possible addition to the next printing. Rhodes and Stachowicz teach classes and sell supplies for the techniques in this book. They sell books, patterns, yarns and notions. They teach pin weaving and a variety of related classes using a sewing machine for fabric manipulations, couching and embroidery. They also lecture on related subjects.
