Artful Ribbon by Candace Kling ISBN 1-57120-020-7, softbound, 144 pages, $25.95, C & T Publishing, P. O. Box 1456, Lafayette, California 94549 Haven't we all been stopped in our tracks at least once by a bouquet of antique silk ribbon flowers? In this book all the mysteries of the tiny tucks and gathers involved in creating these works of art are revealed. Surrounded by excellent color photos of finished flowers, clear and easy to understand drawings and text takes you step-by-step through each flower, petal or leaf. And guess what, you don't have to take teeny tiny stitches all the time. I love it! Candace doesn't stop with more that a dozen variations on the rose, she goes on to include instructions for pansies, fuchsias, daffodils and an assortment of buds and berries. She also includes a whole chapter devoted to leaves and their variations. I personally loved the names of some of the leaves, "man overlapping his coat", "man in his kimono-long lapels", "house leaf" and others. One special tip in the book that I had forgotten about was looking into a mirror at your work. Doing this doubles its distance from you and by reversing the image, depersonalizes it. This is a good technique to use with any art work. The last sections in the book are filled with suggested reading and wonderful source lists to help you find supplies. Easy to read and simple drawings helped me through several of these flowers. Time is involved in making each posey but the reward of a beautiful, everlasting bloom is worth it. Now, I have an excuse to buy at least 3 yards of every beautiful ribbon I see! Candace told me to! Enjoy this book. Add it to your library. The photos of the antique pieces are worth the trip. tre |
