Gorgeous; just gorgeous.  This book is good enough to eat.  These were the words of a quilter friend who saw this book in my home, and I agree.  In fact, she was so enthused, that she got on the internet that evening, located a site for the fabrics and book and we are both now ready to begin one of the projects.

This is the seventh book created for Rowan Mills by Kaffe Fassett.  First an artist, then a knitter and designer, Kaffes first quilting book was Glorious Patchwork.  Kaffe Fassets Quilt Road continues his focus on the luscious colors that have come to define his unique look.  Breaking from the quilting tradition of having light, medium and dark colors in each quit, Kaffes fabric colors are similar in a medium and works with his intense colors and unusual, frequently complex, fabric patterns.

The book includes detailed instructions, diagrams and template patterns for 20 projects.  The projects are coded for difficulty; ranging from easy to average, and experienced, to expert.  Most fall in the easy and average range; with two rated for the experienced quilter and one complex, pieced quilt for the expert quilter.  A beautiful kaleidoscope cushion pattern is included, as well as a baby quilt and a whimsical, stuffed patchwork coat for the cat lover.  Most of the designs are by Kaffe, with nine contributed by accomplished quilter friends.  In addition to instructions for each project, the book concludes with a nicely illustrated set of instructions for Patchwork Know How; a glossary of terms and list of sources.

Kaffes book not only appeals to quilters, but also to anyone who appreciates good design and fabulous color.  I showed it to a non-sewing friend who loves Yorkshire where the photographs were staged.  After an hour of closely studying each page, she pronounced it lovely and hinted, broadly, which quilts would make a good Christmas gift.
