Create A Polymer Clay Impression     by Sarajane Helm                                         ISBN 0-87341-999X, Softbound, 143 pgs., full color, $23.95 US, Krause Publications, 700 East State Street, Iola, WI 54990-0001, www.krause.com, International:  715-445-2214, USA:  888-457-2873

Polymer clay is one of the first truly new materials to be used by artists in a long time and is a substance that knows few limitations.  Having been in widespread use for only about 15 years, the uses it is put to by creative artists are amazing.  Sarajane is an accomplished artist, instructor and author and puts her talents to good use in the creation of this pleasing publication.

This book contains a wealth of information for the experienced polymer artist, as well as beginners. It begins with a comprehensive description of the myriad characteristics of polymer clay and detailed directions for preparation; something that can make or break your project.  The chapter on finishes is very interesting and I appreciate the emphasis in every chapter on safety issues. Following are information chapters on surface stamping, carving, transfers and making molds.

Extensive coverage of cane making is provided; including shaping, reduction and covering existing forms. The chapter on sources and resources is very useful.  She lists books on Bakelite jewelry, the first heat-set plastic.  Her description of the uses of readily available objects for forming and texturizing polymer clay will have you shopping with a new “eye.”

The second half of the book contains detailed instructions for dozens of projects. Sarajane begins with small, easily completed items such as jars; light switch and plug plates; drawer pulls; napkin rings; beads; vases from bottles and refrigerator magnets; candlesticks and earrings, all almost “instant gratification” projects. These are good projects for the beginner to learn basic properties of the polymer clay and techniques. The ease of completion encourages one to continue. The projects gradually become more complex. The instructions are clear and concise and the photographs add much to the overall attractiveness of the book.

I find the book to be an excellent introduction to polymer clay and artistically inspiring.  In particular, it evokes many ideas for using polymer clay to give new life to everyday objects.
