Ponchos, Wraps & Scarves by Jane Davis Jane Davis has authored several books including publications with beading, bead crochet and knitting. Knit Ponchos, Wraps & Scarves is an absolute stunner! Buy this book! I can’t say enough about her format, style and presentation, plus unique patterns. There is a full page of short descriptions for scarves, shawls, wraps, stoles, serapes, etc. I copied this page to keep as a reference. My favorite subject matter is Jane’s Anatomy of a Poncho, which breaks down the majority of basic shapes and includes schematics for each type; also a great reference page. You will also learn how to make scarves into ponchos which is a real plus. The abbreviation glossary not only describes the abbreviations; there are also illustrations depicting the steps to make the stitches. Jane has included cast-on methods and stitches that are pertinent to the patterns. Basic knitting stitches are illustrated and explained. There is a section on specialty stitches, techniques and yarn types. A short discussion follow with beads and how to work them into knitting. The patterns include several scarves that are easy to knit and the yarns you choose make all the difference in your finished knit scarf. I glommed onto the Garter Stitch Loopy Mohair Shawl as soon as I saw it. I can’t use mohair; however, there are new synthetics that I can use. Two color mohair yarns are used to make the shawl. There is a scarf that doubles as a beach skirt plus lots more scarves sprinkled with poncho patterns. What is so fascinating about some of the scarves is the use of I-cords for unique finishes on the scarf edges and ends. You can’t help but pull out your knitting needles or knitting tool and make the I-cords for some of these scarves and knit your own finished wearable. Embroidery, knitting and beading with beads onto your wearables are part of several projects. Many of the wrap and scarf patterns include specific instructions to change them into ponchos. The Lavish wrap is perfect as is, and also as a poncho. The yarn used looks like moss flowing across the wrap. Finishing techniques are include with the patterns. I especially like the Easy Evening Poncho, Draping Loops and Celtic Braids I-cord scarves. I hope to eventually make them all. There are not enough words to express how impressed I am with Jane’s book; beautiful eye candy, easy to understand instructions, tips and solutions to make your own wearables exotic and a joy to wear. I highly recommend Knit Ponchos, Wraps & Scarves. |
