The Little Box of
Scarves by Melissa Matthay and Sheryl Thies Knitters will love this little book of pattern cards that are easy to drop into your workbag and take with you. All 20 scarves are entirely different from the others and each pattern is worked with very yummy yarns. Each card is, 8 ¼ ” long by 5 ¼” wide, has a full color scarf photo on the front and the back is set up with finished measurements, materials, gauge, scarf pattern, creative options and an illustration of the scarf length. Instructions for special stitches are included. I like making scarves because they teach me new stitch patterns and I have a finished item when I am finished. Scarves are not lengthy projects and that makes them good choices for those new to knitting. Many of these patterns are very easy to make and a few that are more complex or have more pattern rows before repeating a sequence. My favorite scarves are the Chevron and Feather, Feather and Fan, Triangle and Bold and Beautiful scarves. All of these patterns have easy stitches to follow with the exception of the Chevron and Feather which calls for a vertical double decrease, however, the instructions for this special stitch is included. Both feather pattern scarves are soft and flowing, very feminine while the Bold and Beautiful is campy with large ribbon and fuzzy metal yarn combination. The Triangle looks like chains intermingled and eyelash bits sticking out here and there. I also like the Circular Hood/Scarf which is made up of ribbing and knitted in a tube. I like how the fabric sticks out and then recedes. There are rib scarves - both horizontal and vertical, lacy and leaf motifs, a cable pattern, a scarf with pockets, scarves with dropped stitches, scarves with color changes and stain glass effects and a pattern that will work for both gals and guys. In addition to the pattern cards, one lists the knitting abbreviations and terms along with a note about the authors. This card will get a lot of use since you will use it each time you pick a pattern to knit. The Little Box of Scarves is a handy set of knitting recipes that will be easy for intermediate to experienced knitters to follow; works for advanced beginners, and new knitters will be able to work some of the patterns. This little group of scarf patterns will be a great addition to your library. Review by Lydia Borin |
