Fabric Folding by Rebecca Wat ISBN 1-57120-085-1, Softbound, 96 pages., 2000, Full Color, $22.95, C&T Publishing, Inc., P.O. Box 1456, Lafayette, California 94549, www.ctpub.com, 800-284-1114 I have never done any paper origami but had always wanted to try it. This book gave me an excuse to play and to try something totally new. Rebecca has taken an ancient art and applied it using contemporary materials and colors. The playful choice of colors and fabric prints in the pieces shown in the book makes for a happy afternoon. The drawings and photos cheerfully invite you into her world of creases and folds. After copying the template pattern in the back of the book, I attempted my first "rose." The first one took one hour to complete! The second one took about forty-five minutes but the third one only took me twenty minutes! I was off and folding! What fun. I had to design a wall hanging to use the roses on! There is no easy or quick way to do this process however if you follow each step and stick with it, you will succeed. Some prior origami experience would have helped but mostly a little patience while you figure out exactly where the folds go is all you need. The projects in the book are very diversified. There is something for everyone from quilts to clothing. Each project has its own materials list and clear and complete construction instructions. I cant wait to try some of the harder folds and then of course, I have to add beads to my flowers! |
