Creating Fashion Dolls, Face
Repainting by Sabrina Guidice Sabrina has written two books in this series of Creating Fashion Dolls. This book highlights face repainting with Gene dolls as her examples. You can do a complete makeover of your Gene fashion dolls or any other dolls you would like to update. There is a complete listing of supplies and how to use them, plus a section on color and how it works with paints for makeovers. There is a source list provided to help you find these materials. Sabrina takes you step-by-step through the process of preparing the face, removing old make up before applying new make up. The majority of the book is dedicated to teaching beginners how to makeover one Gene doll, with a photo for each step of the process. You probably did not know that some dolls have their nostrils painted, a mole is sometimes applied and even freckles. You will learn to redo the lips, eyes, eyebrows and apply cheek color. There are several steps to eye painting; it is very in-depth for a glamorous finish. There is a page of sketched lips, eyes, eyebrows, showing how minor changes can make the face look completely different. After you have learned to do a face makeover, you can then learn to sculpt the face with a paste to make a character doll. There are examples of Bette Davis, Julia Roberts, Barbara Streisand and Glenn Close, before and after. By adding paste on the nose, lips or other areas such as forehead before applying paint, a likeness of celebrities can be accomplished. How close the doll looks to a celebrity, family member or friend, will depend on how much expertise you gain through the lessons in this book and practice on inexpensive dolls. There is a gallery of dolls with the faces as the main subject, with a variety of expressions from sad to happy to wicked to funny, primarily by changes of the eyes and eyebrows and whether the paint is applied heavy or light. You can make your doll cross eyed, sensuous, vamp-like, punk, or give them any other appearance that comes to mind. Sabrina’s book is a complete how-to instructional book for beginners who are serious about learning to makeover fashion doll faces. Review by Lydia F Borin |
