Step into a dream world of mystical creatures, tall and short, fat and skinny, dressed and undressed, all with endearing expressions, all very collectible.  These dolls are made of various media; wood, clay, cloth, bronze, porcelain and resin and many are dressed and embellished with various stitchery to enhance their appearance.  I am sure many of these dolls will make you laugh in delight.

Twenty-four doll artists participated in interviews, related their thoughts and ideas and allowed photos to be taken of their dolls in support of this book.  From fairies, to troll like creatures, to Santa, Renaissance figures, clowns, critters to mermaids, fantasy abounds.  There are also character dolls – an image of grandmother or an aunt, two people sitting on a bench and life like Eskimo figures.

The dolls are separated into nine categories; Healing and Spirituality, History and Heritage, Otherworld, Storybook Creatures and Characters, September 11, Christmastide, Needle Arts, Wellspring and The Evolving Artist.  Each of these categories encompasses different subject matter, some very serious and other lighthearted.  September 11 revolves around lost family members and memories through one’s art; Otherworld brings you fun and giggles; while Wellspring delights you with imaginary creatures and life like babies the look real enough to touch.  All the other categories are unique and just as enticing.

You will enjoy the diversity in dolls, as well as meeting the artists, when you take a look through Contemporary American Doll Artists and their Dolls.  Collectors will be very interested to see what new creations are evolving today.
