Elmore by William E. Elmore ISBN 0-9641505-0-6, Softbound, 35 pgs, $9.95, plus $2.50 S&H, published by Annies Attic, Press, Inc., no longer in business. Elmore has a limited supply of these books from which you can still purchase a copy by contacting him at William E. Elmore, PO Box 131, 2183 Westminster Way, Dallas, GA 30132, phone 404-445-7137 I met Elmore at the Crochet Guild of America conference and got a good look at his work and the book he has authored. It was written about six years ago, however, his techniques are right in step with crochet possibilities today. Prior to this book, he had written The Elmore Method which is out of print. I was so happy to see some of these books were still around as one member of my crochet chapter had shown me a much worn copy she snatched up at a garage sale. I had never heard of it before. That member came in with all kinds of samples she had made from Elmores book and was ecstatic at how fast she could work up pieces using his methods. Elmore has what he calls "no-chain" and "hoist-on" foundations which save time and speed up your crochet. He states you do not have to worry about inserting an afghan hook into a long chain when working the foundation for an afghan/Tunisian stitch design. Afghan lovers, do you know about this book? He includes ways to eliminate unsightly seems and shows you more convenient ways to join and build up in areas that do not distract from your work. There is a glossary of terms including his special terms, a chapter on basic beginnings that shows you how to hold the yarn in your hands for working his techniques plus the various crochet hooks required. Next he gives you stitches and patterns to follow to learn the stitches. There are several pages of black and white photo illustrations. He takes you step-by-step through foundations with illustrations and full color images of finished afghans, pot holders, planter doilies and table mats. At the back of the book are patterns to make each of the color examples plus a few others. The last two pages are listed as a Guide to Elmores Stitches and are step-by-step illustrations for making them. He includes stitches that fall between the height of our standard stitches. I have not had time to experiment with Elmores book, but I plan to. I am sure I can use all his techniques in my crochet experimentation and creations. I have showed Elmores book to a few crocheters locally and they were very excited about it. They, too, had never heard his book. If you want to add more techniques to your crochet possibilities and work up quick stitches Elmores book will help you out. |
