Bead Work, first edition edited by Jules & Kaethe Kliot

ISBN 0-916896-21-8, 1984, revised 1991, softcover,  56 pages.

This book is a reproduction of the book Priscilla's Bead Work Book (1912) plus selections from other old beadwork books from the 1900s. The book opens with an introduction and historical update of beading by Jules & Kaethe Kliot. There are detailed instructions for techniques in knitting, crocheting, weaving, netting, embroidery, etc., for creating beaded purses, pins, hair adornment and other items made originally in the 17th through the 19th Centuries. That's back to the 1600s! You are expected to already know the basic techniques. Some of the directions are in very small print and you may need a magnifying glass to read. I will cover the areas outside of crochet and knitting in another review. On page 56 there are diagrams of both knitting and crocheting techniques combined for certain effects. The diagrams are too difficult to see clearly and you would need to use other references for learning the techniques. Anyone already familiar with these techniques will have no problem following the instructions. There are several purse patterns and diagrams included. I counted 30 different colors that were called for making the purse on page 23! I am going to attempt to make the crocheted necklace on page 54 which is tubular in shape; No 782. Since I am new to crocheting I have a lot of trial and error before I master each new technique. I love this design because it reminds me of all the necklaces my Mother and Grandmother made and wore in the past. I believe this book was reproduced more for its historical aspects than a how-to. There are instructions for loopy beaded bags that are oval and square, hat pins that look netted but are crocheted, a profusion of knitted bag patterns including a purse shaped like a pitcher.
