This year I began receiving the Beady Eyed Women's Gazette, their quarterly newsletter. Looking at their newsletter made me think about reviewing Star's netting book. I have found books that stick with one subject very handy because I can immediately pull them out as a reference instead of spending time looking through several books that cover various subjects. This bead netting book starts out with a short introduction and then offers definitions, use of needle and thread and tips.

Basic Netting Techniques instructs you on how to make three bead and five bead netting, Huichol style bracelet, Ogalala Butterfly and Vandyke netting. Easy to follow diagrams are included and some formulas for experimentation. There is a pattern for a combination Vandyke netting and with a diamond shaped stitch as the foundation to work the netting from and to add the clasp. This diamond type stitch is the beginning of making right-angle weave work.

Flat Vertical Netting, Circular Netting and Tubular Netting are explained and a project is offered in each technique. Netting Chain is next which is then combined with a circular netting to make a mandala evening bag. Ideas for projects are noted and then we go to Netted Beads. One bead begins as star shape and becomes an ornament and carousel beads are built from a foundation of bugles and netting. The rest of the book is pages of bead graphs that you can use to make your own patterns. The directions for all the techniques and the diagrams are clear and easy to follow.

I use this book every time I start a new bead netting class to refresh my memory which is so full of ideas, that it just can't hold all the data. That is when books come in handy. This is a good book for beginners and as a bead netting reference.

The Beady Eyed Women's Gazette is an advertisement for their books, kits and classes but they also offer tips and fully illustrated techniques such as the peyote stitch curl and tiny pouch pattern in their Spring 1997 issue and teddy tiny pouch pattern and replacing a missed bead in peyote stitch in their Autumn issue. You can email or write them about to order the book and information about their newsletter.
